Mozilla Fennec and Nokia N800

with one comment

I got to say that I’m so excited about this news. Six hundreds percent faster than Micro B! All I’m thinking is that now I can read Google Reader without compromising to mobile edition because normal version is too slow to be usable.

I owned Nokia N800 for about a month and half and it worked so far so good. I used it as my bed side internet tablet. Didn’t carry around much because I would prefer to use my 13″ laptop.

Install Fennec is straightforward as common application in OS2008. I clicked at the bottom link from ArsTechnica and it redirected me to Application Manager, then asked me to install. That’s it! Then I opened Fennec from extras menu. It took a while before it show up. I thought it doesn’t work. Just before I want to cry, it finally showed up. (Note: it took a while because I opened too many applications that time. I tested again and it didn’t that much again.)

The excitement soared up and droped down immediately just when I clicked at the url bar. On-screen keyboard didn’t show up. However, I can still use fullscreen on-screen keyboard if I press the center button on the D-pad. Now the first website I went to is Google Reader.

I encountered a login screen as usual. When I clicked at the username textbox, on-screen keyboard didn’t show up too. It’s ok because I can still use fullscreen keyboard. Now I went to the password textbox and pressed the center button. It sent a form submit request instead of display fullscreen keyboard! I tried several times, several methods and it’s no use. Can’t type password means I can’t login. This should not be a problem for N810 owner since they have physical keyboard, though.

The version I tested is alpha version. I will update again if other version come up. (This review based on Mozilla Fennec 0.0-2008032901)

Conclusion

  • Fennec alpha version works on Nokia N800.
  • Page loading speed is impressive.
  • No scrollbar (use stylus or finger to drag the screen)
  • No Adobe Flash (There is “Click here to install plugin” but when I click nothing shows up)
  • On-screen keyboard doesn’t show up when a textbox is focused (Can use fullscreen on-screen keyboard in some situation but password textbox in all websites I tested will send form submit request instead of show keyboard – in other word – can’t login because can’t type password)
  • Almost all module for Firefox is not working in this version as stated in the wiki page of this project.
  • No context menu
  • No main menu

  1. I was having the same problem with the on screen keyboard on my N800 when trying to login to GMAIL. I found that if you double tap on the screen to zoom in and select the logon boxes, and press the center key it will bring up the KB.
